ENLIGHT Summer course: Sex, Gender and Health.Understanding and Overccoming inequalities
A summer course part of the ENLIGHT Thematic Network (ETN) project IMPULSE “Interdisciplinary Network on the Impact of Sex and Gender in Health” to be held on June 17 and 18, at the University of Bordeaux


The international summer school is organised each year by Isped, in collaboration with the Bordeaux Population Health Research Centre (INSERM U1219). It is open to professionals wishing to strengthen or update their skills, and may be of interest to Master's and PhD students. The modules offered (in person or online), grouped into three main areas (biostatistics and data management, epidemiology, and public health and prevention), provide up-to-date knowledge of key methods and practices in public health applied both to industrialised and to developing and emerging countries in order to address major health issues.
Objectives of the summer course IMPULSE:
- Understand the role of sex and gender in health, disease expression and healthy ageing
- Address the health impacts of genderbased violence
- Recognize health challenges faced by LGTBI+ individuals
- Integrate sex and gender into health education
- Foster a transdisciplinary and intersectional approach
Above these objectives, the course will also deal with the following:
- Foundations and Inequalities: Key concepts, social science and anthropological perspectives, economic impact of gender bias, and legal/regulatory approaches.
- Public Health and Research Methods: Epidemiological, statistical, and computational tools integrating a gender perspective; bias in scientific knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment development.
- Sex-and Gender-Specific Health: Infectious diseases (immunity, resistance, microbiome), mental health, and healthy aging.
- Vulnerabilities and Inclusive Care: Health consequences of gender-based violence; LGBTI+ health disparities and development of inclusive practices.
- Communication and Digital Bias: Role of language, imagery, and digital tools in shaping bias in medical education and public health.
Besides, a two‑day lecture series will be followed by a seminar on 19 June 2026, open to all participants registered in the summer school module.
